How day rates are calculated

Day rate = annual revenue target ÷ billable days. There are about 260 weekdays a year; subtract public holidays (≈8–12), vacation (≈20–25), sick days and gaps between contracts, and many contractors land between 180 and 220 billable days.

Half-day rates are shown as exactly 50%; many freelancers charge a premium (e.g. 60%) for half days because the other half is hard to sell. Need the revenue target? Start with the hourly rate calculator.

FAQ

How many billable days are in a year?

Roughly 260 weekdays minus holidays, vacation, sickness and bench time — commonly 180–220.

Is a day rate better than hourly?

Day rates reduce time tracking and avoid penalising you for working efficiently; clients get predictable costs.

How many hours is a day rate?

Usually 7.5–8 hours; agree this in the contract.
